The Curse of Oak Island season 11 has come to an end, but the show is likely far from over.
Chances are, when brothers, Marty and Rick Lagina first decided to travel to Nova Scotia in search of a rumored ancient treasure – they never imagined that their quest would eventually turn into a hit documentary series Let alone a hit docuseries with 11 seasons.
Yet, planned or not, History’s popular show, The Curse of Oak Island, has just wrapped up its 11th season on air.
Has The Curse of Oak Island been renewed for another season?
Generally, shows that do not fall into the “sitcom”, “talk show”, or “home videos” categories struggle to make it past a handful of seasons.
But Marty, Rick and the rest of the so-called Fellowship of the Dig have now filmed content for The Curse of Oak Island for over a decade.
And despite the ever-present criticism that The Curse of Oak Island has never really followed through on its promise of delivering the oh-so valuable treasure that has lured treasure hunters to this area for centuries – Marty, Rick and the rest of the team have not shown any signs of slowing down.
In fact, Rick recently took to Facebook to request fans’ assistance with identifying some of the more puzzling artifacts which have been uncovered on the island through the years.
On the record, The Curse of Oak Island has not been officially renewed for a 12th season yet. But unofficially, there is really no doubt that the show will be back before long.
The Curse of Oak Island over the years
There are not many shows on television right now that can say that they have aired over 200 episodes. Overall, The Curse of Oak Island’s run on television can be summarized as follows:
Detail | Description |
Series premiere | “What Lies Below” on January 5, 2014 |
Most recent episode | “Worth the Weight” on April 30, 2024 |
Total episodes (to date) | 224 |
Total seasons (to date) | 11 |
The Curse of Oak Island by the numbers
The Curse of Oak Island’s viewership numbers have dipped slightly over the course of the last few years. At its height (season four’s “Blood is Thicker” episode), The Curse of Oak Island brought in 3.79 million viewers.
But, when season 10 premiered in November of 2022, the show only amassed about 2 million viewers.
However, this decline does not necessarily mean that The Curse of Oak Island has lost its place as a hit television show.
The premiere of The Curse of Oak Island season11 brought in 2 million people, and by the time that the show’s third episode aired, this number had grown to 2.4 million.
At this point, the only other shows that beat these viewership numbers were the Fox News programs NFL college football and a Hallmark movie.
This still earns The Curse of Oak Island a place on History’s most-popular-show list, as well as the most-popular-shows-on-cable list, overall.
And while networks consider a wide range of factors to determine which shows they should keep around – these viewership numbers will certainly count in the show’s favor.
Exploring The Curse of Oak Island’s backlash
Although there is little doubt that Marty, Rick and the rest of the team will be heading back to Oak Island in the near future – it seems like the show will have to shift gears if it wants to maintain its large fan-base.
The final episode of The Curse of Oak Island season 11 had barely finished airing when the onslaught of ‘another season without any treasure’- comments started rolling in.
One hopeful fan on Reddit even stated “Alls I can say is season 12 better be a tribute to the treasure they found” – which, naturally, was met with a rousing chorus of responses like “Prepare to be disappointed.”
What to expect from The Curse of Oak Island season 12
Since we are still waiting on the official word that The Curse of Oak Island will return for a 12th season, all of the season’s details are still undetermined.
However, a few educated guesses tell us that Marty, Rick and the rest of the Fellowship of the Dig will all reprise their roles if (and when) the show does return.
The very last few critical moments of The Curse of Oak Island season 11 saw the team hit yet another snag when it failed to locate the source of the precious metals that they detected near the Garden Shaft.
And it is fair to assume that the show’s next season will see them return to their mission to explore the Garden Shaft, the Baby Blob and the Money Pit.
Is there really any question that The Curse of Oak Island will return for a 12th season?
