Why you will no longer see Cutie Pie on Moonshiners

Why you will no longer see Cutie Pie on Moonshiners

Moonshiner Josh Owens did confirm in 2020 that his beloved dog, Cutie Pie, had passed away.

The Discovery Channel documentary show, Moonshiners, follows the underground work of various Appalachian moonshiners who do their best to run their businesses, while evading the law.

However, for a series focused on booze and illegal maneuvers, Moonshiners has actually had quite a few heartfelt moments over the years – and this certainly includes the unshakeable friendship between moonshiner, Josh Owens and his dog, Cutie Pie.

When Josh first joined the Moonshiners cast, he introduced Cutie as his “savior” and his “best friend.”

What happened to Cutie Pie

Now, more than a decade later, long-time Moonshiners fans have grown used to seeing Cutie Pie in just about every scene of the show where Josh is present.

That is, of course, until Cutie Pie was bitten by a copperhead snake in a 2017 episode of the series.

But while Cutie Pie did recover from that snake bite, it took a toll on her health, and she was featured less and less on the show over the years.

Unfortunately, it has now been confirmed that Cutie Pie will not return in any future seasons of Moonshiners. Josh sadly announced in a July 13, 2020, Instagram post that his beloved sidekick did pass away.

The moonshiner also added an emotional good-bye message, in which he called his long-time animal friend a “one in a million kinda gal.”

Why you will no longer see Cutie Pie on Moonshiners

Josh and Cutie Pie’s run on Moonshiners

The very first season of Moonshiners premiered on Discovery Channel back in 2011 and it did not take much for the show to inspire a few new entrepreneurs to try this risky business for themselves.

Josh was actually introduced as one such a hopeful up-and-coming moonshiner in the second season. And, of course, Cutie Pie was right by his side.

And while Cutie Pie may not have been included in any of the official Moonshiners cast lists through the years, there is no doubt that she deserves some recognition as one of the show’s most popular honorable cast members.

All in all, Cutie Pie’s run on Moonshiners can be summarized as follows:

Appearance First appearance Last appearance
Episode Season 2, Episode 1 Season 7, Episode 5
Title “Rise and Shine!” “Second Chances”
Initial air date November 7, 2012 December 12, 2017

How old was Cutie Pie when she died?

If you are a long-time Moonshiners fan, you will know that Cutie Pie had a more exciting and more dangerous life than most beloved pets.

And fans have not only been privy to Josh and Cutie Pie’s unique partnership, but also to a few close-calls, over the course over the past decade.

Though, despite all of Cutie Pie’s bee stings and snake bites, this beloved dog lived to be 18 years old.

And avid Moonshiners fans will not be surprised in the slightest to hear that Cutie Pie did, in fact, spend most of her well-lived life right by Josh’s side.

The moonshiner jokingly quipped “I haven’t hardly taken a step without her in the 17 years that we spent together or should I say could hardly take a step that cutie pie wasn’t faithfully by my side.”

How Josh continues to keep Cutie Pie’s memory alive

There is no doubt that Josh was heartbroken after the death of his dear friend and sidekick, Cutie Pie.

In fact, this reality television star even went as far as commissioning a painting of Cutie Pie and asking Moonshiners fans to send in any photos that they could find of this beloved unofficial cast member.

More recently, Josh also released some merchandise, including a brand new line of coffee, called “Cutie Pie’s Hair of the Dog.”

He also frequently takes to social media to share some of his favorite memories of Cutie Pie and to share a few snaps of his old friend.

Josh just may have a new best friend

If you are not all caught up with all of the newest Moonshiners goings-on, you may have missed the fact that Josh was recently involved in a near-fatal motorcycle accident. Fortunately, he has been recovering  slowly but surely.

However, a recent video posted on Josh’s Instagram page, which is captioned “Thanking how lucky I am that I get another chance to still be dad still leave a good legacy.” reveals that he may have welcomed a new four-legged best friend to his home during his recovery journey.

And, from the looks of it,  this new pooch seems to be enjoying just as much love and attention from Josh and his daughter as Cutie Pie received, when she was still around.
