The prices shown on Love It or List it may vary between Canadian Dollars and United States Dollars because the show moved around between seasons.

Love It or List It is not like the other shows on HGTV, in that it actually gives homeowners the choice between renovations and a new home.

Love It or List It has moved back and forth between North Carolina and Toronto during its almost two decade-long run on television, so the currency of its home prices varies.

The Love It or List It format

The shows on HGTV’s roster usually fall into one of two categories: a show about people wanting to a buy a new house, or a show about people wanting to change their current house.

But Love It or List It, which is hosted by expert-designer, Hilary Farr, and real-estate legend, David Visentin, is the best of both worlds.

In this show, Farr attempts to make the homeowners fall in love with their current homes again by sprucing up and re-decorating the space to be more practical.

Visentin, on the other hand, endeavors to show the homeowners everything that could be waiting for them if they listed their current homes on the market.

The truth about Love It or List It’s home prices

The Love It or List team has helped hundreds of homeowners over the course of the show’s 19 seasons, but its producers and hosts have also been quite busy behind the scenes.

Many longtime fans, who have been watching the reality series since its first season back in 2008, may not know that Love It or List It is actually Canadian.

In fact, both the show’s hosts hail from north of the border, and so does the show’s production company, Big Coat Media. This is also where the series was filmed when it first started airing.

But much like the homeowners who appear on the show, Love It or List It later decided to expand its horizons and the show’s entire production team moved to North Carolina in the United States for a few seasons in 2015.

When these seasons had run their course, the show seemingly moved back to its old home-base in Toronto, where it has been ever since.

So even though this has never officially been confirmed, it is fair to assume that the home and renovation prices and currencies discussed on the show can be broken down as follows:

Original episode air date Currency
Between 2008 and 2015 Canadian Dollar
Between 2015 and 2021 United States Dollar
2021 to the present Canadian Dollar

Who pays for the renovations on Love It or List It?

When watching along from home, it may seem like the households that appear on shows like Love It or List It get incredibly lucky to get all of these renovations done to their homes.

However, in the case of Love It or List it specifically, the homeowners actually have to carry the cost of all the renovations (and the cost of their new home if they decide to “List it’) themselves.

And while Hilary has a real knack for repurposing old décor and design elements and refurbishing them, these renovations are likely to add up quite quickly.

Love It or List It has gotten intro trouble about price transparency in the past

It is difficult to imagine that a long-running show that appears to be as wholesome as Love It or List It, has skeletons hiding in its closet, but the series has found itself in the middle of a legal battle with Deanna Murphy and Tim Sullivan, who were featured in a 2015 episode.

The couple’s lawsuit, which was ultimately settled privately in 2017, alleged (among other things) that the funds that they had provided for renovations were not properly dispersed and that this had resulted in sub-standard work.

How much does it usually cost to appear on the show?

In every Love It or List It episode, the couples who have applied to be on the show have to choose between “Loving” their current home or “Listing” it and moving on to a new house.

However, most of the homeowners who appear on the show tend to choose to stay in their newly-upgraded homes.

The reasons why these homeowners choose to “Love it” vary, but choosing not to buy a new house is not always as cheap as it may seem.

When the show made its move back to Toronto in 2021, the casting call mentioned that couples needed a renovation and design budget of at least $75,000 to even apply to be on the show.

However, recent reports indicate that this number has now climbed to $100,000.
