After three seasons of stock footage about the Aztecs, Blind Frog Ranch finally decided it was time to go to Mexico in person—and they tapped James Keenan for the task.
Keenan headed to Mexico City on a mission from Duane Ollinger to “search for clues about the ancient artifacts they’ve been finding” on Blind Frog Ranch.
And, as expected, no real expedition took place—just a touristy stroll around downtown Mexico City and a meeting with a local historian.
What could go wrong? Keenan is credited with helping the team find its first “gold”—a rusty, gold-esque nugget that sent Chad into an exaggerated state of euphoria, proclaiming, “I finally get to hold gold in my hand!”—three seasons in, and that’s the payoff.
As for Keenan’s meeting with the historian, it was as offbeat as you’d expect.
The historian, Julio, is greeted by a cosplayer in full Aztec regalia, who proceeds to burn incense in his face right in the middle of Mexico City’s streets.
Julio is then tasked with explaining how Aztec gold supposedly made its way not just north, but specifically to Utah—or rather, to Blind Frog Ranch.
And yes, Julio is somehow convinced to go along with this wild leap in logic.
And get this: after reading a single sentence from a rudimentary map at Mexico’s National Museum of Anthropology, Keenan proclaims, “What Julio translated from this map is quite possibly the most incredible finding I have ever heard in all of Aztec research.”
Really? A single sentence from a basic map is now a groundbreaking discovery? How exactly is Keenan an ancient civilizations expert again?
