Kitchen Nightmares provided many memorable episodes including the profiling of Irish pub, Grasshopper Also, which was closed in 2012 after the owners sold their shares.

Kitchen Nightmares is the 2007 FOX Network premiere reality-format cooking show produced by culinary expert and television personality, Gordon Ramsay.

The first two seasons of the series can be considered pilot seasons, as the show found its flow during the third and fourth seasons of the series.

One of the more memorable episodes of season four was the profiling of the Irish pub, Grasshopper Also.

The pub, which was co-owned by married couple, Mitch and Maureen as well as Maureen’s father Chief, featured in 2011 and closed down a year later as the pub was sold to new owners.

What was Kitchen Nightmares?

Kitchen Nightmares marked a pivot from the type of reality-format cooking show that Gordon Ramsay was known for at the time.

Before introducing the series, Ramsay had fronted and executively produced Hell’s Kitchen for the FOX Network, which focused on professional chefs looking to further their careers by being on the series.

The premise of Kitchen Nightmares, on the other hand, was, “Gordon Ramsay visits struggling restaurants across America and spends one week trying to help them become successful.”

The show ran for seven seasons between 2007 and 2014, until Ramsay made the decision to end the series abruptly during the last season.

Is the Grasshopper Also from Kitchen Nightmares still open?

Grasshopper Also marked the fifth episode of season four of Kitchen Nightmares airing in February 2011. Grasshopper Also was envisioned as an Irish pub, which was run by Mitch and his wife, Maureen, as well as Maureen’s father Chief.

At the heart of the failing business was Mitch, who was blamed for the decline in the business’ success, due to his lack of motivation when leading the staff. Moreover, the chefs in the kitchen did not have experience with cooking Irish food.

Gordon Ramsay intervened by introducing experienced chef, James, to take over the kitchen, and changed the menu to an Irish-American offering with less dishes, so that the kitchen could focus on producing quality food rather than attempting to rush the completion of too many dishes.

While the business received mostly favourable reviews afterwards, it closed down in 2012, as the business was sold to new owners.

What are Mitch, Maureen and Chief doing now?

Mitch, Maureen and Chief are not technologically savvy, confirmed by the fact that Grasshopper Also did not have a POS system until it was introduced by Gordon Ramsay, so it is not surprising that they also do not have a social media presence.

As a result, there is little to no information on what happened to the married couple and Chief. The only update that was given was by the new owners of the property in October 2012, prior to the opening of their new business.

The new owners reportedly took to Facebook, writing, “For everyone who has supported Mitch, Maureen, and Chief for so many years, we would like to say thank you.”

What happened to Grasshopper Also after its closure?

Following the closure of Grasshopper Also in 2012, the business was continually purchased by other aspiring restaurateurs in the hopes to turn around the luck of the property.

The first business that opened in October 2012 was Eastside Ale House, a sports bar. In 2016, Eastside Ale House closed, and reopened as Primetime Sports Lounge and Restaurant, which then closed in 2017.

The closure came less than a year after the sports bar and restaurant was opened to the public.

Currently, the business is a tapas bar called Segovia Meson, and the business is still operational with mainly positive reviews about the restaurant.

Final thoughts

Kitchen Nightmares ended when Gordon Ramsay made the choice to end the series abruptly during the seventh season, in light of the growing criticism from the public that the series exploited the featured restaurateurs for ratings, rather than genuinely intending to turn around their failing restaurants. Hence the seventh season has the least number of episodes.

One of the most memorable restaurants that were profiled during the seven seasons was the Irish pub, Grasshopper Also, which featured during season four in 2011. In 2012, the business closed as it was sold to new owners.

Till today, no formal word from the former owners Mitch, Maureen and Chief has been shared on why the decision was made to sell the business.
