Is My Lottery Dream Home real?

My Lottery Dream Home is pretty much as real as any other kind of house-hunting show and it does feature real lottery winners.

The house hunters who appear on My Lottery Dream Home are all real-life lottery winners. And although the reality series may re-shoot a  few scenes, it is still quite accurate to real life.

Is My Lottery Dream Home real?

The odds of winning the lottery are roughly one in a few million (about 42 million for the California Super Lotto and up to 176 million for Mega Millions, to be exact).

Furthermore, the odds of finding a home that meets all of a family’s needs can be just as steep, but there are exceptions, like the winners that feature on My Lottery Dream Home.

My Lottery Dream Home is seemingly as “real” as it gets. All the house hunters featured on the show are real-life lottery winners that get to tour potential houses and hang out with the host, David Bromstad, just like on TV.

However, Brian Kutz, who was on the series in 2019, did confirm that the show often re-shoots scenes and reactions multiple times to get different angles and sound bites.

But this kind of technicality can be expected in pretty much every reality television show.

My Lottery Dream Home actually had trouble casting lottery winners in the beginning

Michael Krupat, who is an executive producer of the show, revealed that they actually struggled to get lottery winners to agree to be on the show initially. Bromstad  also confirmed that the first season took almost two years to cast.

Fortunately, things seem to have changed since then, and lottery winners now reach out to the show on their own. Kutz admitted that he and his wife, Tuk, joked about being on the show before they even purchased their winning ticket.

Do people already own the homes before featuring on the show?

The jury is still out on this one. One user, jennyd40c863665, claimed in a Buzzfeed article from 2021 that her uncle had bought his beach home way before he appeared on My Lottery Dream Home to “choose” the home.

On the other hand, Bromstad has insisted that he sometimes gets calls years after the winners actually receive their checks, because he really does help the winners who appear on his show to get the best deals.

How much do people spend on their My Lottery Dream Home homes?

Just like in real life, some lottery winners on My Lottery Dream Home are more extravagant with their purchases than others.

One couple even purchased an entire mountain, though Bromstad has revealed that the winners’ budgets vary vastly and are often simply based on “how much money they’ve just won.”
