Although Garage Squad has not officially been cancelled, fans should not expect season nine to arrive anytime soon.
There is just nothing like settling in, in front of your television, phone, laptop, tablet, or wherever else you stream from, to watch your favorite television show.
And what makes this moment even better is when your favorite show not only includes a bunch of helpful tips, but also features a group knowledgeable automotive experts who rush to the scene at stalled project cars, to help deserving owners with their stalled and forgotten projects.
This kind of educational, feel-good format is exactly what has made MotorTrend’s Garage Squad so incredibly popular through the years.
Why Garage Squad’s renewal seems so unlikely
Unfortunately though, as we all know, viewership numbers and the relative popularity of a show is often not the only things that networks consider when it comes to the decision to renew it for another season, especially in the overly-competitive streaming industry.
So while Garage Squad has not officially been cancelled yet (and the show’s website seems to be back up and running, for now) – it has also not officially been renewed.
And with the clock slowly ticking away, we are steadily approaching almost two years without so much as an update on Garage Squad or the show’s renewal.
And though it is certainly possible for Garage Squad to be rebooted after all this time, it does seem like the possibility of season nine appearing on the MotorTrend lineup sometime soon, is becoming less and less likely by the day.
Garage Squad’s first eight seasons
Garage Squad has aired a total of eight seasons and 84 episodes so far between the show’s season one premiere, which aired all the way back in 2014 and the show’s most recent season eight finale episode, which aired in 2021.
All eight of the Garage Squad seasons can be summarized as follows:
Season | Initial air dates | Total episodes |
Season 1 | August 1, 2014, to September 26, 2014 | 9 |
Season 2 | August 11, 2015, to October 27, 2015 | 12 |
Season 3 | August 24, 2016, to October 26, 2016 | 13 |
Season 4 | September 6, 2017, to November 1, 2017 | 10 |
Season 5 | August 29, 2018, to October 31, 2018 | 10 |
Season 6 | September 11, 2019, to 30 October 2019 | 10 |
Season 7 | October 6, 2020, to December 15, 2020 | 10 |
Season 8 | October 20, 2021, to December 22, 2021 | 10 |
Why Garage Squad may not be coming back
There are many different factors that networks take into consideration when they decide which series to renew for each new season.
And while Garage Squad holds a special place in the hearts of many MotorTrend fans, there are a few factors that may be causing the Warner Bros. Discovery executives to drag their feet on the show’s renewal.
This includes the fact that the series may be much more expensive to produce than some of the other car restoration-type shows which are currently on television (given the fact that it requires an entire travelling-circus-style production setup).
Another contributing factor is its various sponsorship agreements and thorough application process may complicate things behind the scenes.
The Garage Squad radio silence
It is certainly not unheard of for MotorTrend to cancel one of its popular shows without an official announcement. And the fact that the official Garage Squad Facebook page has not posted anything new since January 2023 does not bode well for its return.
However, this most recent post had nothing to do with the series and you will need to scroll all the way back to December 24, 2021, in order to see anything even related to new Garage Squad episodes.
This makes it seem highly unlikely that the Garage Squad team has been working on any new projects related to the show in the last two years and builds a pretty strong case against it being renewed for the upcoming season.
It seems like the Garage Squad team has moved on
Even if Garage Squad does somehow return for a ninth season at some point in the future, it is likely that the series will look very different to how it did in the past, since most of its expert-filled cast seem to have moved on to other projects.
According to Bogi’s Instagram page, she still has her hands full working on new projects and filming for her other hit MotorTrend show, All Girls Garage.
And Bruno has actually been filming for the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) show (alongside his former Garage Squad co-host, Cristy Lee) recently. Joe is now filming content for a streaming service called 0260TV.
