At this point, it seems like Expedition Bigfoot might end after season four, but there is still a very small chance that the show could come back.
There is always a certain lull right after a new season of a beloved show runs its course.
But while this lull is usually interrupted by the official announcement that the show will be returning for a brand new season at some point in the future, there are also a few (very rare) occasions where this lull inevitably continues as the renewal for the show drags on.
Unfortunately for the fans of Travel Channel’s hit paranormal investigation show, Expedition Bigfoot, this has been the case since the end of the show’s shorter-than-usual fourth season ended.
Will Expedition Bigfoot be renewed for a fifth season in 2024?
On paper, it seems increasingly likely that Expedition Bigfoot will not return for a fifth season.
But, since the show’s cancellation has not been officially confirmed yet, there is still a very small glimmer of hope that Mireya Mayor, Bryce Johnson, Russell Acord and the rest of the team will be able to continue with their crusade to track down this elusive Sasquatch species.
Expedition Bigfoot from the beginning
Perhaps one of the more worrying signs that Expedition Bigfoot may be on thin ice with the powers that be is the fact that the show’s most recent, fourth season, only ended up having eight episodes in total.
This is almost half the number of episodes of the show’s previous two seasons, which included a total of 14 and 19 episodes, respectively.
This change was so jarring, in fact, that Mayor even had to set the record straight on her Instagram page to clear up all the confusion.
To illustrate just how out-of-sorts this eight-episode format truly was for the show, the details for all four seasons of Expedition Bigfoot over the course of the last four years can be summarized as follows:
Season | Total episodes | Initial air dates |
Season 1 | 8 | December 8, 2019, to January 26, 2020 |
Season 2 | 14 | January 3, 2021, to June 19, 2021 |
Season 3 | 19 | March 20, 2022, to September 27, 2022 |
Season 4 | 8 | August 30, 2023, to November 3, 2023 |
Why would Expedition Bigfoot be cancelled?
There is a lot of planning and careful consideration that goes into making your favorite channels what they are. And the reality is that there are many different reasons why some shows end up getting the axe unexpectedly.
Networks and studios consider a variety of factors before deciding which shows they will bring back (and which they will not) every season.
This includes things like viewership numbers and ratings, budget availability, production costs, cast scheduling, licensing opportunities and more.
And, in the end, there are many reasons why the higher-ups at Travel Channel and Warner Bros. Discovery may be holding off on bringing the Expedition Bigfoot team back for another round of cryptid-investigation fun.
What we know so far
It seems like the Expedition Bigfoot team has taken a page out of the cryptid notebook, as official updates about the show’s future have been few and far between since the conclusion of season six.
At one point it seemed like there may be light at the end of the tunnel, when Mayor and Acord teased that they would be making a so-called “BIG announcement”.
However, this exciting news turned out to be an announcement about a special Expedition Bigfoot campout that had nothing to do with the still-unconfirmed season five.
And the most recent update from Mayor’s Facebook page only confirms that she has no new information to share on the subject.
It seems like the Expedition Bigfoot cast is already moving on
The only piece of hope left to hold on to that Expedition Bigfoot might return to our screens at some point in the future is a recent Instagram post on Johnson’s page.
This post teased fans with the rather cryptic message that stated: “…just you wait and see”
However, while fans have been waiting at the edges of their seats for any concrete information on the new season, it seems like most of the Expedition Bigfoot cast has been keeping themselves busy with various other projects.
Johnson recently revealed that he had a small speaking part in the hit film, Oppenheimer (the film that won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2024).
Mayor released a new book called Just Wild Enough and her 2024 calendar is already filling up with various keynote speaker engagements and other event, and Acord has been hard at work co-hosting the Expedition Bigfoot camping events and appearing at conferences throughout the country.
