Kitchen Nightmares ran for seven seasons profiling over 77 restaurants during its run, out of those restaurants, a total of just over 60 restaurants have closed down.

Kitchen Nightmares first premiered on the FOX Network in 2007. Fronted by Gordon Ramsay, the show enjoyed seven seasons until Ramsay decided to abruptly end the series.

He ended the series during season seven which had a total of six episodes, as opposed to the last few seasons that had an average of 15 episodes per season.

Throughout the series run, an average of 77 restaurants were profiled. However, when looking at the success rate of the series in managing to turn around the failing restaurants, it did not leave a lot the series could be proud of, as just over 16 restaurants survived and are still in business in 2022.

What was Kitchen Nightmares?

Kitchen Nightmares was a departure from reality show formats that Gordon Ramsay was popular for such as Hell’s Kitchen which focused on helping to propel the careers of professional chefs.

Kitchen Nightmares’ premise, on the other hand, was, “Gordon Ramsay visits struggling restaurants across America and spends one week trying to help them become successful.”

However, it was this exact premise that affected the show’s longevity as most of the restaurants would go out of business following Ramsay and his team’s visits.

Therefore, Kitchen Nightmares for viewers became more about the drama that took place than the “happy ending.”

How many Kitchen Nightmares restaurants have closed?

Kitchen Nightmares ran for a total of seven seasons between 2007 and 2014. The series had a total of 92 episodes, some of which were two-part specials and recaps of restaurants from the previous seasons.

Altogether, there was an average of 77 restaurants which were profiled throughout the seven-season run of the series on FOX Network.

From the restaurants profiled, there were a total of just over 60 restaurants that closed down in the months and years after they had appeared on Kitchen Nightmares.

Mostly, this was due to the restaurants either reverting back to their previous coping mechanisms, or completely negating the lessons learnt from the series.

Overall, there was a 22 percent success rate of restaurants that continue to be operational in 2022 from the entire series.

To make it easier to see how many of the restaurants did not survive in the years since they were profiled on the series, we share a list of the restaurants that have since closed down from season one to season seven.

Final thoughts

Despite its intentions to help restaurateurs with failing businesses turn around the matter through the assistance of Gordon Ramsay, Kitchen Nightmares did not live up to its premise.

This is not entirely Ramsay’s fault, as most issues were interpersonal, and therefore could not be remedied through solely revamping the restaurant.

In light of this, we can deduce that the show, after seven seasons and over 77 restaurants profiled, has a 22 percent success rate to date, as most of the restaurants that were on the series have since closed.

This means that there are just over 60 restaurants that are not operational in 2022.
