The most recent “All in the Family” episode of Good Bones may have just exposed some of the team’s deeper issues with each other.
Mina Starsiak Hawk, Karen E. Laine and the rest of the Good Bones crew have certainly never held back when it came to mixing business with family.
But the most recent “All in the Family” episode makes it pretty obvious why this is not always such a good idea.
This episode (which aired on October 11, 2023) sees the Good Bones extended-family-team tackle two close-to-home projects. They renovate both Tad’s (Mina’s brother) and Kelsy’s (her sister) new homes.
When tensions start boiling over
Kelsy’s home is definitely breathtakingly beautiful at the end of it all (with a modern moss-green kitchen, open floor plan and surprise chicken coop in tow) and Tad’s home looks to be off to a promising start. But there were more than a few cringe-worthy moments throughout the episode.
For a start, Mina was giving off strong older-sister energy throughout most of the episode. Not only did she basically strong-arm Kelsy into knocking down her two kitchen walls, but she also argued with her ‘client’ about the kitchen backsplash.
To be fair though, Kelsy did then disappear on a vacation for the last part of the renovations, so it may be for the best that Mina took charge.
And over at Tad and his fiancé, Anna’s new home, Tad realized just a moment too late that his girlfriend may not take too kindly to his sister’s suggestions for their upstairs bathroom design (queue the awkward pauses).
However, Mina was not the only one who took a few liberties with the designs in this episode, as Karen seemingly did all of the exterior landscaping at Kelsy’s home, without even consulting her daughter about what she wanted.
Overall, it seems like this episode has really exposed some of the issues which have plagued the Good Bones team behind the scenes.
The “All in the Family” to-do lists
However, despite these underlying tensions throughout this “All in the Family” episode, the Good Bones crew did not refrained from pulling out all of the stops.
Some of the major to-do list items for each of these projects during the episode include the following:
Project | Tad’s house | Kelsy’s house |
Renovation budget | $181,000 | $25,000 (though Mina did say that including labor, the total cost came to about $75,000) |
To-do list |

The behind-the-scenes issues with Two Chicks and a Hammer
Longtime Good Bones viewers may already know that Karen retired from Two Chicks and a Hammer, Inc. in 2019 (though she still appears on the show).
However, it seems (although it is completely unrelated) like things have gone from bad to worse at the company since she left.
In 2022, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fined the company $40,000 for violating federal lead paint laws.
Moreover, Mina announced via Instagram just a week ago that the business’s Two Chicks District Co. retail location will be closing down at the end of 2023.
All about Mina’s family drama
Unfortunately, the behind-the-scenes drama is not only limited to the Good Bones team’s business dealings.
It is likely that the moments which made this “All in the Family” episode so awkward to watch were simply evidence of some of the family’s real-life issues rising to the surface.
Mina recently explained in her Mina AF podcast that she has not been close with many of her family members for quite some time.
She said, “Not only do my mom and my two brothers not fall into that category of being involved in [Mina’s children’s] life on a regular basis, we’re also not on good terms.”
Why the show is coming to an end after this season
This “All in the Family” episode of Good Bones may have brought up some complicated feelings for Mina and the rest of her extended family.
But it seems like they will not have to continue dealing with having their real-life issues exposed for much longer.
Mina announced via a podcast episode in August 2023, that this eighth season will be the show’s last.
It is worth mentioning, though, that Mina did go on to explain that the show’s cancellation was a mutual decision between her and the network, and that it had less to do with family drama and more to do with the fact that she felt like she was taking on too much and needed to slow down for a bit.
